I'd suggest trying this route if you are in an urban area... (with craigslist - cash payments).

So far I have $499 for the Wind, $24 for the Dell WiFi card (in anticipation for installing OS X on it) and $22 for the 1GB RAM card.

Have you considered trying OpenOffice? I use NeoOffice on my Macs and it works fine reading and editing Word and Excel documents.

It's what did Julie ALREADY do that is the question, for which there is already an answer ;o)

I just ordered a replacement WiFi card on eBay for the Wind... According to Paul's OS X installation instructions, the installed WiFi card does not have OS X drivers.

Paid $37 something with shipping. Pricier than going with some of the other eBay sellers, but this one is located here in the US instead of China. I figured I'd get it a lot faster...

Thumbs up for Linux :o) Does the Acer have a 10 inch display? That is something that is pretty important to me. The Asus EEE PC had a smaller screen, so it wasn't all that enjoyable as a web browsing device.

Please let us know how this goes. I am going through the same ordeal for a year-long deployment...errr, trip to the desert. I am leaning towards a MacBook as I think it will last/survive a bit longer and I can flip back and forth between the OS I prefer and the OS my "company" uses.

Answer me this... you say that you wear the glasses to bed... so, if you had a very nice / large flat panel HD display mounted on the ceiling, would you still prefer it to the glasses? Just curious.

I think glasses will work as I do wear them for normal every day stuff, I did try them on with glasses and I rather not wear them because it does touch the lens of the glasses. Since I'm 20/15 vision I just leave them off to use the viewer. I found that a personal feature of a man's larger nose might make the difference for all the HID systems out there that sit on the bridge of the nose. Mine leaves a little read mark on my bridge but it goes away quick. I got the Crystal Viewer hooked up to my Canon XL2 Video Camera, and for some fun with a little practice on a vest and stabilizer arm from GlideCam you can look about as cool as it gets, and get the shot of a life time.

I like both of the HID I have but prefer the Crystal over the Solo because as you noted that the arms on the viewer over the ears are not the most comfortable in the world. I wear the Solo to bed mostly, and the the Ear Plug Speakers fit nice into the ears even laying on my side. I don't care much for that design of the rigged arm like protrusion with the speaker on the end of it for your ears, not well thought out at all.

I do look like something from Battlestar Galactica when in bed at night with the Glasses on and in my case a full face respirator I have to sleep with on all night. If I had the guts I'd post a picture, but my fear of showing up on some YTube Site with the title of "Forget the Tree Man, look at this poor sole!" :-)

please contact all vendors before your product review to determine if/when/how they will have mac drivers!

it should be a common courtesy ...

but marketshare will soon make it simply a practical necessity - the mac already 20% marketshare (usa retail laptops) and is heading towards 30% next year.

the chinese oem's in hk/tw who supply your gadgets may not understand the realities of where the growth lies in the marketplace (because they are so out of the loop) but it your responsibility to your readers to at least get the basic info from the PRODUCT MANAGER (not from pr weasel or a first-line crm).

2a) this review does not address the issue of whether ipods (and other i* devices) can be backed up with this new addition to the Double Dragon ...

would this level of connectivity require that media players support the 'Extended' feature of 'USB-On-The-Go' which requires a slightly more intelligent host adapter than the generic kind.

2b) file transfer via direct USB connection will surely have a higher throughput than when mediated through a file browser on an o/s (ie an embedded controller like the doubledragon presumably doesnt suffer from all the I/O latency that a desktop PC would impose, correct?) ... some benchmarks would be useful on this point.

and certainly direct disk-to-disk data transfer would be quicker for an ipod than using the built-in archive (dvd) feature of itunes, correct?!

3) it would be nice to know (again talk to the PRODUCT MANAGER!) why two sata are supported but yet the controller chip does not support two pata drives?!

btw: it would be nice to know of the doubledragon controller was developed in-house or is a merchant chip which DD then has oem'd into the branded solution they offer now?
